WORCESTER - A female student from WPI in Worcester discovered a hidden camera in her door room last month. The incident has launched an investigation with a fellow male classmate coming forward, admitting to the crime.
According to Masslive, the female victim and her boyfriend discovered a small camera wedged in between the mattress of a bed not being used in her dorm room on January 23. The couple were unable to retrieve data after attempting to look at the camera’s SD card. The following day the female student informed her roommates of the discovery.
The male suspect is said to have approached the female student about the camera, and asked to examine the SD card, which he did so in his room, according to police. The male suspect then returned the camera back to the female student who eventually brought the camera home to her father.
The female student’s father and a friend were able to extract a brief video and audio from the camera. The video recorded was that of the suspect and a male friend talking. The camera was then turned over to investigators by the female student on January 27.
WPI investigators then approached the suspect, who confessed to planting the camera in the student’s room in an attempt to record content sexually gratifying in nature. Investigators also seized a laptop, a second SD card and USB drive.
The materials along with the camera have been turned over to the Massachusetts State Police Cyber Crime Unit.
Meanwhile, the suspect will face the WPI’s Campus Judicial System in regards to his case and discipline.
WPI officials have since isued a statement, sharing with Masslive that the “alleged behavior in this case is entirely inconsistent with WPI’s values as a community.”
“As soon as we learned about the case, the student was ordered to stay away" from the victim, WPI officials said. “WPI Campus Police are conducting an investigation, and the case is being referred to WPI’s Campus Judicial System for adjudication. WPI is fully committed to the health and well-being of our community, and we will continue to work diligently to make our community safe.”
