VIDEO: New Ryan Reynolds Movie Takes Over Worcester With Fake Explosions

Worcester, MA– Famously (or infamously, depending on how you view the situation), a 1938 radio broadcast of the story, “War of the Worlds,” sent the country into a frenzy because of how everyone thought the story was a real news bulletin and they believed that the apocalypse was upon them. Obviously, people are a bit savvier these days, but every now and then there are still anecdotes that involve people thinking it’s the end of the world as they know it, as Michael Stipe would say.

Take, for example, the 2012 blockbuster, The Avengers, which filmed in Cleveland, Ohio. To shoot the climactic “Battle of New York,” the filmmakers turned a street in Cleveland into one that looked like a war-torn New York City lane. Pedestrians who were unaware of the shooting remarked that they genuinely believed that their city was under attack in some capacity. Mistakes and misunderstandings like that still happen!

It would be a bit harder for confusion like this to happen in Worcester, though, because even though the city is pretty good, it still has a bit of a reputation, if you will. So things like explosions and gunshot sound effects may not phase Worcester residents the way they would cause panic in the minds of the residents of other cities. That is what has been taking place lately throughout the Worcester Common and a number of surrounding streets that have been shuttered to accommodate for the filming of a new Ryan Reynolds movie, Free Guy.

The video above shows a couple of stuntmen, the sounds of fake gunshots, and a controlled fire-based explosion, all of which could just be a day in the life of Worcester! In all seriousness, though, the city made a point of alerting people to the fact that the movie was filming so people would not fly into a frenzy over the noises.

Instead, residents can just enjoy the fact that a movie star of Reynolds’ caliber has set foot in Worcester for the filming of his new movie. The tweet above from @agreenphotog shows the Deadpool star walking around the city and giving a wave. Quick! Someone ask him what he thinks of Kelley Square!
