Sandwich, MA– A woman was driving along Route 6A at about 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning when she hit a wild turkey in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The large bird smashed through her windshield. While the driver was lucky to walk away from the scene with only minor injuries, unfortunately, the turkey did not survive. The Sandwich Police Department detailed the incident in a Facebook post.

The 43-year-old driver, name not yet released, suffered minor injuries due to broken glass from the turkey smashing through her window. According to police officers that responded to the scene, the woman’s 2007 Kia Sportage had some heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene of the incident.

One of the responders at the scene, Sandwich Fire Lt. Robert Black, explained that the turkey had gone through the passenger side of the windshield, passing between the driver and passenger’s seat, and landing in the rear compartment of the Kia Sportage. Black stated: “Upon arrival, the vehicle was parked in the middle of the road, feathers all over the road.” Officials understood why the car was not immediately moved to the shoulder, as the 43-year-old driver was likely in shock and still trying to comprehend what had just happened. It’s not every day a turkey busts through your windshield.

After investigating the scene, authorities came to a possible reason behind the accident: solar glare. The driver may have been unable to see the bird as it crossed the road due to the intense morning sun.

Sandwich Fire Lt. Robert Black said this was a rare incident, the first of its kind he has responded to. He said of the driver, "She’s very lucky." The driver’s injuries were assessed on the scene and found to be minor.

At least it was a turkey crashing through the windshield, not a deer. Be careful out there fellow drivers!
