Dorchester, MA - It seems that everywhere you turn these days, there’s a new ramen shop opening up just around the corner. You might be tempted to think the centuries-old dish may have hit its peak as a national trend, but you’d be mistaken. New York-based chain Totto Ramen has just announced their third location in the Boston area at the South Bay Town Center in Dorchester, tentatively scheduled to open in early 2019.

Totto Ramen—which also has locations in downtown Allston and at Assembly Row in Somerville—is the brainchild of Bobby Munekata, who established the first location in downtown Manhattan in 2010 and quickly became known as one of the best ramen shops in NYC. The chain was first established at its Allston location in 2014 by Totto Ramen partner Nghi Nguyen, who left a law career to devote himself as a restauranteur full time.

Nguyen, who was raised up in the area, says he chose the South Bay location because “There was an old 88 market here, and I grew up shopping there,” referring to the local Asian supermarket chain. “The opportunity to go back to the area and add something to the community was very appealing to me.”

Nguyen promises that the menu will stay true to the Allston and Somerville locations, which includes a spicy Chicken Paitan ramen, Char Siu Pork ramen and a small list of appetizers including pulled pork rice balls and seaweed salad. In addition, Nguyen also plans to incorporate a beer list from smaller area craft breweries.

The Dorchester location is expected to seat approximately 40, including a bar, with plans for outdoor patio seating as well.

Totto Ramen isn’t the only restaurant to move to the recently revitalized South Bay Town Center. Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ, Wahlburgers and Midici Neapolitan Pizza are all setting up shop in the complex over the coming months.

Nguyen’s next move? To bring Munekata’s other celebrated hot spot, Yakitori Totto, to Boston at some point during the next two years.

Totto Ramen is located at 169 Brighton Ave in Allston (open from 12:00 pm - 10:00 pm Sunday - Wednesday and 12:00 pm - 10:30 pm Thursday - Saturday) and 463 Artisan Way at Assembly Row in Somerville (open 12:00 - 10:00 pm Monday - Thursday, 12:00 pm - 10:30 pm Friday - Saturday and 11:00 am - 9:00 pm on Sundays.
