BOSTON – It has now been over a week since David Ortiz was shot at a club in the Dominican Republic and it still seems like we are learning something new about the event every single day. Authorities are still in pursuit of suspects while other suspects in custody are slated to meet with judges soon.
Meanwhile, David Ortiz continues to make progress at Massachusetts General Hospital, even if he is not close to being at full strength yet. We also learned through statements from his wife, Tiffany, that if it was not for the quick actions of people near Big Papi, he could very well have died on that fateful night.
Regardless, the news keeps coming and everything seems to be trending in a generally positive direction. But I did not want to let too much time pass before I shared the myriad reactions that came as an outpouring of support for Big Papi when he needed it most. During that confusing, frightful time, the well wishes of the many were the only thing getting a lot of people through it. I thought it might be a good time to look back at these reactions, now that we know that Ortiz is no longer in life-threatening condition and we can smile about them, instead of biting our nails.
The most emotional one came from former teammate and friend Pedro Martinez on MLB Network. It's hard to watch this one without getting choked up.
A number of other former teammates chimed in to wish Ortiz all the best, including Mike Lowell, Kevin Millar, Manny Ramirez, and Shane Victorino.
A number of current Boston Red Sox players, including Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Jackie Bradley, Jr., also joined the voices echoing their support for Ortiz, which also included active baseball players from around the league, like Mike Trout. Even President Barack Obama wanted to weigh in to let know Ortiz that the world was rooting for him.
But perhaps the most heartwarming message came from Maverick on Intentional Talk.
That just tells you everything you need to know about the way the world of baseball and the way the world, as a whole, feels about Ortiz. It is with immense gratitude that we can all give our support on his road to recovery!
