BOSTON – When a major musical production comes to Boston, there's often a rush on tickets. A year ago this November, I saw a live touring production of Hamilton. Being that it is my favorite musical, the show was an absolute delight that lived up to every expectation, at a cost much more affordable than on Broadway in New York. Now, Boston-based musical fans have yet another great show coming to them.
Tony-nominated "The SpongeBob Musical" is currently on a national tour that will take the production to forty-five different cities around the United States. A year after it debuted on Broadway, it is still having enormous success and will be playing at a theater near you starting next week.
Yes, "The SpongeBob Musical" is running from October 15 to October 27 at the Wang Theatre in Boston. The touring cast consists of Lorenzo Pugliese as the titular sponge, Beau Bradshaw as Patrick Star, and Daria Pilar Redus as Sandy Cheeks. Cost varies from twenty-five dollars to one hundred and twenty-five dollars.
Music in the show comes from all sorts of artists, including John Legend, David Bowie, and the Boston-based band, Aerosmith. If you ever wanted to see the porous cartoon live on stage, this is definitely going to be your best shot.
As for the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise itself, it still remains extremely successful. A thirteenth season of the show is in production and, if I had to guess, will bow on Nickelodeon at some point in the next year. Additionally, It's a Wonderful Sponge, the third movie in the SpongeBob film franchise, which has seen adaptations of the television show in 2004 and 2015, is slated for release in theaters on May 22, 2020.
There's never a bad time to be a SpongeBob fan, but perhaps now is the greatest time of all.
