Stop & Shop to bring Self-Driving Grocery Stores to Boston Residents

Boston, MA - Earlier this month, Stop and Shop officially announced that they will soon be launching driverless grocery vehicles in the Boston area. This process will begin as soon as Spring 2019.

What can you expect to find in these driverless grocery vehicles? A lot.

According to officials, these vehicles will be driving around delivering groceries directly to your house. Everyday, the vehicles will be loaded with fresh produce, meal options, and everyday items for customers to choose from.

Here’s how the process sort of works: You’ll go online, either on your computer or mobile application, and you’ll select what you wish to purchase. The vehicle will then drive to your doorstep with a variety of fresh produce and items that you’ve selected. The catch is that you’ll have a few options to choose from, that way you’ll be able to select what you specifically want. For instance, if you ask the vehicle to bring you strawberries, the vehicle will have a few boxes of strawberries to pick from instead of just delivering one package. That way you’ll get to check out the strawberries to see if they meet your expectations.

Mark McGowan, Stop & Shop President, came forward to say that he and his team are trying this out as a way to use technology to make it easier for the customers to shop. In other words, instead of going to the grocery store all the time, the vehicles will be able to make shopping more convenient for all consumers.

To get started, all you’ll have to do is log into the smartphone application and summon one of these Robomart vehicles to your house. Once the vehicle arrives, you’ll go outside to the vehicle, unlock the doors, and personally select all the products you’d like to purchase. When finished, all you have to do is close the doors and the vehicle will drive off. The vehicle will then record what you’ve selected to purchase to avoid having to check-out on a computer screen. The receipt will then be e-mailed to you within seconds. It’s as easy as that!
