Sen. Warren Criticizes Immigration Laws In Relation To Tibbetts Murder

Boston, MA - Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts appeared on CNN this week. While being interviewed, Senator Warren suggested that the U.S. government is wasting resources on separating children from their parents as opposed to crafting legislation that creates "an immigration system that is effective." The statement was made in response to Mollie Tibbetts murder in Iowa.

Mollie Tibbets, a 20-year-old student from the University of Iowa, was allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant. Her body was found in an Iowa cornfield on Tuesday after an extensive search was conducted.

Tibbetts disappeared on July 18, 2018 after leaving her boyfriend’s house in Brooklyn, Iowa. She was said to be on a a morning jog.

The murder suspect is Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a 24-year-old Mexican national whose legal status in the U.S. is unclear after his lawyer purportedly stated that he was in Iowa via a legal work arrangement. Rivera's own employer has refuted his legal residency, identifying him as an illegal immigrant. Rivera has been charged with first-degree murder, according to Iowa police.

From Rivera's account, he blacked out after following the 20-year-old psychology student during her jog. He was caught on surveillance tape and later led police officers to the scene of the crime.

Yesterday, while Senator Warren was being interviewed by CNN host John Berman, she stated that the United States needs a better immigration system that focuses on more important issues. She also stated that a lot of real immigration problems are not being taken care of and that they should be taken into account sooner rather than later.

"I'm so sorry for the family, and I know this is hard," said Sen. Warren, "But one of the things we have to remember is we need an immigration system that is effective - that focuses on where real problems are ... I think we need immigration laws that focus on people who pose a real threat, and I don't think mommas and babies are the place that we should be spending our resources."

Senator Warren went down to the border last month, where she says that she encountered a horrible situation. Children were being taken away from their mothers, mothers were being lied to, mothers were unaware of where their children were really going, and plans were not being made to reunite the children with their mothers. All of these scenarios were unacceptable, according to Senator Warren.

Senator Warren told John Berman that our immigration system should be focusing on illegal immigrants that are a real threat. She stated that our country should not be wasting its resources on separating mothers from their children. Warren says separating mothers from their children will not make this country safer.
