BOSTON - I just want it to stop. There are large swaths of continents around the world that are currently on fire. There is vitriol and insults and name-calling among people who are supposed to be world leaders. There are nations on the brink of war. And the one thing that's supposed to be an escape from all that (sports) is constantly disappointing us again and again. So yes, I just want it to stop.
A couple of months ago, the Houston Astros were accused of using modern video technology and a noisy trash can as a method of stealing signs from other teams during their 2017 season. It was all fun and games until the Red Sox were implicated, too! According to a new report that was published yesterday by The Athletic, the Boston Red Sox employed its video replay room as a tool to steal signs from other teams throughout their 2018 championship season.
The report, which counts three anonymous members of the Sox organization during 2018 as its sources, claims that Red Sox players would enter the replay room, decode the signs between opposing pitchers and catchers, and then inform the other members of the team. The sources said in-person monitors were placed in these rooms during the post-season and it was then when the cheating allegedly ceased.
The direct quote from The Athletic's source reads, "If you're using a camera to zoom in on the crotch of the catcher, to break down the sign system, and then take that information and give it out to the runner, then he doesn't have to steal it." In the Red Sox's official statement, they said, "We take these allegations seriously and will fully cooperate with MLB as they investigate the matter." That's what they all say!
This also comes after the New England Patriots were accused of recording plays from the sideline of the Cincinnati Bengals during a matchup with the Cleveland Browns, ahead of New England's game against Cincinnati.
The NFL's current investigation into the allegations against the Patriots for cheating is reportedly likely to result in some sort of punishment for the football franchise. The investigation into the Red Sox's new scandal is only just beginning. If the accusations of both are true, then why? Our Boston sports teams have access to funds that other teams around their respective leagues would kill to have. Why can we never have one year where one of our teams isn't accused of cheating? Why do they insist upon doing it? I don't get it. All I know is I just want it to stop.
