BOSTON – MassDOT has shared that the city's HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lanes aren't helping traffic in Boston much, as an overwhelming amount of single drivers have been illegally using the carpool lanes.

As shared by WCVB, Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack raised the issue on Tuesday at the Local Government Advisory Commission meeting when discussing the city’s traffic and the HOV lanes both north and south of the city.

Pollack also shared that the individuals gutsy enough to ride in the HOV lanes meant for two or more riders were relying on a closed Twitter group to dodge the police.

"I was shocked to find out that there is a closed Twitter group for people who use your carpool lane where they tweet at each other and say, 'there's no cops, it's OK for single cars to use it,'" Pollack shared.

"And we think as much as 80 or 90 percent of the traffic is actually just individual people in cars and it's not functioning as a carpool lane.”

Pollack and other officials learned of the failing HOV lanes following the release of the Baker Administrations report on traffic.

The report cited that the HOV lanes "do not necessarily provide sufficient travel time savings" for commuters. In fact, much of the improvements the MassDOT have attempted to make with the HOV lanes have been in vein.

"It has, for example, been 30 years since MassDOT has seriously looked at the utility of high-occupancy vehicle lanes or thought much about its role in providing park and ride lots," the report also shared. "A comprehensive re-thinking is long overdue."

The HOV lanes issue and other upcoming projects has Pollack and other officials looking for new ways to improve congestion prior to the 2020 construction season, per Boston 25 News.

"We would love to have more high-occupancy vehicles, but this time around we're going to have to figure out a way that they're actually high-occupancy vehicles and not just individuals who are brazen enough to use the lane," Pollack said.
