BOSTON - In terms of the film landscape in Boston, 2020 is going to give 2019 a run for its money. Yes, 2019 had Little Women, filmed around Boston, and Uncut Gems, centered around the 2012 Boston Celtics. But 2020 has Ben Affleck and Matt Damon reuniting for a new movie, a Ryan Reynolds comedy that was filmed in Boston and Worcester, and a new Netflix movie. The Netflix original is a Boston-based film that will star Mark Wahlberg, one of the quintessential Massachusetts actors, and it is called Spenser Confidential.

Spenser Confidential is the story of a former police officer who is training to join the MMA (Mark Wahlberg). While getting in shape, he befriends another MMA hopeful (Winston Duke) and the two end up following the threads of a double homicide that they want to solve. It is directed by Peter Berg, who has previously worked with Wahlberg on movies like Lone SurvivorDeepwater Horizon, and Mile 22. The pair also collaborated on Patriots Day, the story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Spenser Confidential is based on the Ace Atkins book, Wonderland.

I'm not really sure what to say about this movie except for the fact that it seems like the most Mark Wahlberg thing ever. I'm not personally a big fan of MMA or Wahlberg, but I do enjoy Winston Duke and the premise of the movie sounds like one that might be interesting enough. This is especially true for people like me, who always enjoy crime movies set in the city of Boston. It's a great genre! The film is slated to hit the Netflix streaming service on March 6 and also stars Post Malone.

The film was announced in a big "tweetstorm" from the official Netflix Film account, alongside more anticipated feature film debuts exclusive to the streaming service. Among these was a new film from David Fincher about the making of Citizen Kane, a new drama from Ron Howard, comedies from Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler, a sequel to To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and a documentary about Taylor Swift. But only one of these is set in Boston!
