FOXBOROUGH - If the NFL's annual Madden video game featured the best football player of the year on the cover, then Tom Brady probably would have set a record for most appearances on video game covers in history by now. Instead of Brady, though, this year's edition - Madden 20 - will feature Patrick Mahomes, the young hotshot quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. The game will feature a slew of features specific to the New England Patriots, however, and player ratings were just released for the upcoming season.
Recently, Brady and Julian Edelman were ranked as the fourteenth best quarterback and wide receiver combination in the entire league. They should probably be a bit higher, but their Madden ratings do seem to reflect the actual quality of their play. Brady is the highest ranked player from the Patriots in the game with a 96 overall rating. Brady should be a 99, but a 96 is palatable. Edelman should also be in the 90s, but he's instead saddled with an 89, which is still respectable. Stephon Gillmore is the only other New England player in the 90s, with a 94.
Devin McCourty, Shaq Mason, James White, Michael Bennett, and Jason McCourty are the only other New Englanders with ratings at an 85 or above. Notably, Sony Michel received an 84, Dont’a Hightower nabbed an 83, and rookie wide receiver N’Keal Harry will begin his career with a 74 score.
Brady had some fun on Twitter with the score reveal as he tried to advocate for himself to have a higher speed rating in the game:
Of course, EA Sports also had some fun right back with Brady by tweeting a video with video game graphics of one of Brady’s teammates giving high fives to the Patriots before dissing Brady and leaving him hanging, which was also the impetus for one of the league’s most famous gifs and memes:
