Headlines for the Weekend of July 13 and 14
- In an early Sunday morning, President Trump sent out a series of racist tweets aimed at progressive Democratic congresswomen saying"why don't they go back and help fix the...places from which they came". These tweets seemed to be aimed at the young congresswomen of color, including Boston's own Representative Ayanna Pressley. This follows after Rep. Pressley's testimony on Friday to members of the House Comittee on Oversight and Reform about the conditions she saw when visting a border facility earlier in the week. Pressley brushed off the comments. She - along with almost all the congresswomen the president directed his comments at - were born in America.
- While Boston is not on the official list of cities targeted for ICE raids, immigrant communities in Boston are fearing the worst. These raids have been repeatedly postponed, but in the interim local lawmakers are looking to strengthen previously existing laws that would prevent local law enforcement from aiding ICE or sharing information with them in any way.
- If you're headed down the Cape this coming week, stay safe - there have been three great white shark sightings this past weekend: two in Truro, and one in Orleans.
- You might be taking a vacation during these long, hot days of summer, but state lawmakers on Beacon Hill aren't. On their slated agenda? A carbon tax and bills seeking to limit smoking and vaping.
