Genki Ya Sushi To Expand To Davis Square, Somerville

Somerville, MA - For many Somerville residents, the loss of Diva Indian Bistro last January meant a loss of Davis Square itself. Because while Somerville’s never been at a loss for Indian food, the decades-old restaurant was in effect as much an institution as the Burren or... dare we say, Sacco’s?

Residents shouldn’t be mourning too long. Popular Brookline-based sushi restaurant Genki Ya has just announced the opening of their fifth location taking over Diva’s former space at 246 Elm St.

The restaurant—which currently operates in Boston, Cambridge, Dedham as well as its flagship location on Harvard St in Brookline—has fast gained a reputation based on its use of organic ingredients, specialty maki and (at least in their Theater District location) late night hours.

Yet they’re not exactly hurting for competition; Davis Square is also home to the likes of O Ginger, Sugidama, Snappy Kitchen and national poke chain Pokeworks.

While there’s plenty of traditional sushi and non-sushi favorites that will always have a place at Genki Ya, it’s the one of a kind items that drive its popularity among Boston diners; tempura mushroom rolls, escolar and their own specialty combinations.

Signage is already up at the Elm St location, but no word yet as to when they plan on opening or proposed hours of business.
