WASHINGTON, D.C. - Many figures around the NBA are reaching out to former NBA star and Boston Celtics guard Delonte West to offer their assistance and support after a very troubling and disturbing video surfaced online. According to West's agent, Aaron Goodwin, he was involved in a fight on the streets of Washington D.C. where he was badly beaten. He is currently in recovery, but the videos of West taken after the altercation show him clearly in a bad mental state. He was in handcuffs and made multiple claims that he had been assaulted by someone with a gun.
In response to the video, West's former coach, Phil Martelli, of Saint Joseph's, tweeted his concerns in regards to West.
"We are reaching out to our basketball network to get the professional help Delonte needs. This is so very painful."
Martelli also remarked that many were willing to do what they could for West, including his former college teammate, Jameer Nelson.
Nelson, a former point guard for the Orlando Magic, took the biggest leap in helping West. He is currently in the middle of garnering support for his friend and he released a statement on the situation, reading, "Mental illness is something that a lot of people deal with and don’t even know it, until sometimes it’s too late. I’m not sure what exactly is going on with D-West but he knows I’m in his corner and will help him get through this."
Delonte West played in the NBA from 2004 to 2012, bouncing around to multiple teams. He began his career with the Boston Celtics from 2004 to 2007, before again joining the team for their 2010-11 campaign. Since leaving his playing days behind in 2015, West has been the subject of numerous controversies. Speculation in the past has thought that West was homeless, which was what many began to think of when this new video made the rounds on the Internet.
According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, West has been given multiple opportunities in assistant and behind-the-scenes help from his former teams, including the Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks. Per the report, West was given a job as a scout by Danny Ainge of the Celtics. He was tasked with scouting games in the Washington D.C. area, but the report also stipulates that West had been extremely inconsistent with showing up for the job on time or at all.
Clearly, there is something else at play here. West does not seem to be in the right headspace for a job, but he does seem to need all the support and help he gets. I hope he can get the necessary rehabilitation because this was just sad. He doesn't deserve to be in this state. No one does.
