CAMBRIDGE - For decades now, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts has made a tradition of their student comedy theater troupe, the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. The group was formed in 1795 and in 1951, they began an award ceremony for the Woman of the Year. The award is an honor for entertainers and was joined in 1967 by the Hasty Pudding Man of the Year. Since then, the award has become a coveted one among comedians and entertainers and it is treated in high esteem by the recipients.
The 2020 Man of the Year has not yet been announced by Hasty Pudding, but the 2020 Woman of the Year was announced to be Elizabeth Banks! Banks has had a storied career in comedy in the entertainment industry. She has received Emmy nominations for her guest roles in Modern Family and 30 Rock. She has also starred in such shows as Scrubs, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.
In films, Banks starred in Wet Hot American Summer, Spider-Man 3, Our Idiot Brother, The Lego Movie, the Pitch Perfect trilogy, and the Hunger Games franchise. She also directed Pitch Perfect 2 and last year's reboot of Charlie's Angels, which she also co-wrote.
A native of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Banks' storied career is being honored with a Cambridge parade on January 31. The parade is one of the best parts of the annual ceremony and Banks will also take part in a roast of her that will take place following the parade. The Hasty Pudding group will also put on a preview of their production, "Mean Ghouls," to showcase their own comedy stylings.
Last year, the recipient of the award was Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World) and in 2018, it was Mila Kunis (That 70's Show). Notable recipients from past years include 2015's Amy Poehler, 2010's Anne Hathaway, 2001's Drew Barrymore, 1988's Lucille Ball, and 1980's Meryl Streep. The very first recipient was Gertrude Lawrence in 1951. The Hasty Pudding 2019 Man of the Year was Milo Ventimiglia (Gilmore Girls).
