BOSTON – Over the years, Elon Musk has gotten a lot of flak for his antics and for the actions of his automotive company, Tesla. Self-driving cars have been one of the most hot button topics of debate since Tesla began to make major headway on them in recent years, but in this particular instance, there can be no denying that the intuitive driving capabilities of a Tesla vehicle probably wound up saving lives.
This video, shared over the weekend on Twitter by Dakota Randall, showed a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel completely while driving on the Mass Pike. Without the Tesla car adapting well to the driver not even being cognizant of the car in motion, there is a good chance that a major car accident could have occurred.
Obviously, without the secure knowledge that a Tesla could take over if one was to fall asleep, who is to say that a quick nap would have ever been in the cards for this driver in the first place? Regardless, it is an assuredly bizarre video, but the car seems to be handling itself rather nicely. In fact, the one who is probably acting unsafe in this video is the driver who is recording someone else while also driving on the Pike.
According to state police, there is no law against falling asleep while driving, but that did not stop a panic-stricken Randall from trying to wake them up anyway. After all, self-driving cars definitely seem like a great possibility, but I agree with Randall. The thought of what could go wrong would always be nagging me in the back of my mind. I'd feel the need to honk my horn, too. It would certainly be better to have someone awake who can adapt to any problems that might arise. But for now, trusting a Tesla will have to do.
