Castle Island Brewing Co. Kicks Off Their Second Beer Garden at Constitution Wharf

It’s been a tumultuous year for beer lovers in Boston. Despite the proliferation of craft breweries—now estimated to reach over 200 throughout the Commonwealth by the end of 2019—and new tap rooms opening up seemingly every three days, recent attempts to limit the number of licenses available for outdoor beer gardens has left both vendors and patrons of what is a now ubiquitous sight throughout the city wondering where else to turn for a hops-laden fix.

The answer: Constitution Wharf in Charlestown, where Castle Island Brewing Co. began the start of their second seasonal pop up last week. The opening came on the heels of a limited spring pop-up at Boston Public Market earlier in March

“After a successful few months in Charlestown last year, we are very excited to be returning this year,” said Castle Island CEO Adam Romanow in a press release. “The community was super supportive and welcoming last summer, and we look forward to continuing to build and strengthen that relationship in the coming weeks.”

The four-year old Norwood-based brewery took home a silver medal for their American lager at the Great American Beer Festival in 2018, and chose the Constitution Wharf location after facing permitting issues at their initial choice of Ink Block in South Boston.

There are currently less than a dozen beer gardens operating throughout Boston. In 2018, the number of applicants for one-day beer garden licenses was approximately 82.

While no take-homes will be made available, the Charlestown pop up will include Castle Islands’ flagship IPAs and American lager, the Charlestown location will include limited edition pours such as their Candlepin session ale, Lil’ Dynomite red ale and a host of gluten free options, wine and non-alcoholic drinks. Future additions will include food truck vendors and live music. The pop-up promises to be both dog and child-friendly.

Convivial drinking. Children. A wharf. What could go wrong?
