FOXBOROUGH – Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, can come off a little... gruff. He seesm like the kind of guy who's hard to get to know, and who everyone's a little bit afraid of because he never smiles.
But then, Belichick will do things that surprise you, like when he does typical “fun grandfather” things with his grandkids, or actually has a laugh during a press conference. So, when you see behind the steel curtain of his face, it's interesting. That is why his relationship with Rob Gronkowski was so bizarre. Gronk was a hard worker, there’s no denying that, but their connection, despite having opposite personalities, was a special one.
And, well, another one of these out-of-character moments for Belichick has come to the Internet's attention, thanks to an image shared by a Reddit user, u/timthedriver.
My Dad sent a letter to Belichick asking a congratulatory letter on me getting my Eagle Scout. And he actually replied! from r/Patriots
In the post, the user, whose name I can only assume is Tim, said that he achieved the level of Eagle Scout within the Boy Scouts of America and to commemorate the accomplishment, Tim’s father sent a letter to Belichick, asking if the coach could congratulate his son regarding the moment.
I never would have expected it, but Belichick actually responded to the letter! He congratulated the Eagle Scout, acknowledged the honor that comes with the rank, and wished him the best of luck going forward in his future endeavors.
Talk about a letter you will save for the rest of your life! And, of course, it would not be a letter from the Patriots organization without a mention at the bottom of the page regarding how many Super Bowl championships they've won. After all, if anyone knows about the rewarding feeling of achieving a high honor, wouldn’t it be Belichick?
I know it is just a small gesture, but I just think it is cool that Belichick took the time out of his busy preparation schedule for the upcoming season to write this letter. Of course, he probably will not have the time to answer all the other letters he will receive as a result of this one going viral.
