68 Year Old Victim in Somerville Hit and Run Accident Dies, Police Confirm

SOMERVILLE, MA - Massachusetts State Police have confirmed that a 68 year old man struck in a hit and run accident early Sunday morning has died as a result of severe injuries.

The victim, identified as Kevin Demont, was immediately rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital with critical injuries following the incident. State Police presume him to have been homeless.

A driver who witnessed the incident indicated Demont was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk at the intersection of Mystic Avenue/Route 38 and Shore Drive at approximately 3:00 am on Sunday, August 25. The driver fled immediately following the incident and has not been found.

While the crash remains under investigation, police are releasing very little information about the vehicle. Anyone who may have seen the incident or has information about the driver or vehicle involved is encouraged to call State Police at 781-396-0100.

This is the second fatal hit and run incident to occur on Mystic Avenue in a little over a month. On July 20, Cheryl Pauline Richards was struck in a crosswalk shortly after 8:00 pm. She was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital shortly afterwards where she was pronounced dead. The driver, Zewdu Abate Gedamu, 64, of Roxbury later turned himself in to police and was charged with leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury or death.
