Boston, MA - 2018’s been an interesting year for the food scene in Boston. We’ve witnessed everything from the closing of long-standing favorites to the encroaching threat of high end steakhouse chains. We’ve witnessed new openings occur in the Seaport District overnight only to say goodbye to them after mere months. We’ve witnessed staff shortages; food trucks expanding to brick and mortar shops; and the construction of an upscale food court in the Financial District.
But outside of a highly contested award for best pizza in the U.S. by TripAdvisor, we haven’t garnered much outstanding national attention this year.
And sadly; that’s not necessarily going to change this month.
The online restaurant reservation provider OpenTable recently released its Top 100 List, compiled from over 12 million verified diner reviews of some 28,000 eateries across the U.S.
The good news? Out of all 50 states reviewed, only 23 made it to the top 100. Massachusetts and Rhode Island were among them.
The bad news? Rhode Island ranked a mere total of three times. Massachusetts only made it twice (with one of those being an aforementioned upscale steakhouse chain.)
By dint of comparison, New York claimed the most awards with 24 winning restaurants, followed by California with 15, Illinois with 9 and Texas with 8.
On the plus side, one of those rankings was esteemed local talent (and Top Chef contestant) Carl Dooley’s niche catering-cum-prix fixe bistro Table at Season to Taste in Cambridge. The other Massachusetts entry was the Capital Grille—and that nomination appears to have counted across multiple states.
In Rhode Island, The Dining Room at Castle Hill Inn, The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn and Bouchard Restaurant and Inn were among the award winners. All of which are located in… Newport.
There’s a trend here. If you can’t see it, some quick math. Real quick.
The average entree for one from all five nominees starts at approximately $53.
So if you’re feeling neglected… just remember the source.
